Engineering in Your Community

This class focused on working with the Beechwood Home, a long term care facility for adults with neurological disorders.  We worked with them to create a solution for problems that were identified.

The problem out group worked to fix dealt with the tables they were using.  At Beechwood, most of the residents are in wheelchairs of all heights.  This fact makes it hard for the residents to eat, as the tables' height are set to accommodate the highest chair.  Due to this, many of the different heights, many of the residents are uncomfortable when eating.

To remedy this we worked on making a table that had four adjustable sections.   We found many solutions for the problem, eventually  deciding on using a self contained adjustable column to change the height.  For the base we used aluminmun tubing for each individual section.  The top was plywood with a laminate covering.

Overall Beechwood home loved out project and felt like it was something that they would like to replicate.  We were unable to finish but hope to continue work on it next semester.
